How To Measure Vintage Clothing

**About Vintage Sizes**
Fashion sizes have changed a great deal over the years. Although a vintage item may be marked as a large, that does not neccesarily mean it will fit the way a modern large fits. To ensure you are getting a garment that will fit you, it is best to use the numeric measurements listed.

All measurements listed for vintage items are the actual fabric measurements of the garment. All measurements are taken in inches. In order to assure proper fit garment measurements must be slightly larger than your actual body measurements. If you do not know your body measurements, the easiest way to determine if a garment will fit you is to find a similar garment you may already have. Lay the garment on a flat surface. Make sure all buttons, zippers, etc. are fastened. Get your tape measure.

Also when buying vintage clothing, please remember that it is NOT NEW. Some items may have become slightly worn or faded over the years.

Bust /Chest measurement

Measure from underarm to underarm. Double that measurement to determine the bust/ chest measurement for the garment. For example, if a garment measures 18 inches across, double that number for a bust/ chest measurement of 36 inches.

Waist measurement

Measure across at the natural waistline of the garment (approximately 5 inches below the bust line) again, double the measurement.

Hip measurement

Hip measurement should be taken approximately
7 inches below the waistline. Measure across and double.Garments listed with a hip measurement of " Full" will usually fit most hip sizes

Shoulder measurement

Measure straight across garment from shoulder seam to shoulder seam.
(do not double this measurement).

Length measurements

Pants or skirts, measure from top hem to bottom hem.
Dresses, sweaters, shirts, coats, etc. , measure from the highest point of the shoulder, down to the bottom hem. (do not double this measurement).

Inseam measurements

Sleeve Length

Measure around your body, under your arms and over the fullest part of your bust.

Waist

Wrap tape around your natural waistline.

Hips
